So you've read all the info about the importance of respiratory protection, and decided you need a good respirator. Now you need to decide - half-face or full-face? Which one's best for the job? Let's find out...

What's the difference?

In case you hadn't guessed from the name, a half-face respirator just covers the mouth and nose, where a full-face respirator covers the whole face, including the eyes. Both types should have a range of filters, pre-filters and cartridges to attach depending on the type of hazards you'll be exposed to.

A full-face respirator provides a higher level of protection than a half-face. It has better sealing characteristics as it seals around the whole face rather than just around the nose and mouth. Since it covers the eyes and face, it also protects against liquid splashes and irritating vapours.

Remember, choosing the right filter for the job and correctly fitting your respirator are just as important as getting the right respirator itself! Also, if you're working in an area with poor ventilation or oxygen deficiencies, you'll need more than a respirator - have a look for a welding helmet with air purifying respirator. Click here to learn why.

How do they work?

Both full and half-face respirators work in the same way in terms of protecting your respiratory system. Both masks should cover your mouth and nose, while the full-face will also may cover your eyes. A built-in valve is used to enable you to exhale easily while keeping the bad stuff out when you inhale. To capture any particles, gases or vapours, pre-filters, filters, and/or cartridges are attached to the outside of the mask.

When is a full-face respirator better?

  • When working with hazards that can irritate the eyes
  • If splash and spray protection is needed as well as eye protection
  • When other protective gear is not required to be worn with it - eg. Face shield, ear muffs could get in the way
  • Working with fine particles, eg. dusts or spray paint - full mask provides a better seal and protects the whole face.
  • When prescriptive glasses are not required as with the arms will effect the seal.

There's one for everyone!
