Replacing your TECMEN PAPR Filters

How often should you replace your TECMEN PAPR filters? Are you changing them too often, or leaving them too long?

How long your filters last depends on the working conditions, contaminants in the air, how often the respirator is used, and the type of filter fitted.

Here’s what you need to know to keep your TECMEN FreFlow PAPR working effectively.

1. How Often Should You Replace Your TECMEN PAPR Filters?

As WorkSafe New Zealand advises, “There is no overall rule about when filters on respirators should be changed – each situation will be different.”

However, there are some important guidelines to follow:

  • Pre-filter: Replace when dirty, damaged or blocked. Regular replacement helps extend the life of the P3 main filter.
  • P3 main particle filter: Replace when damaged, dirty or blocked, or when the PAPR’s filter-blockage warning indicates replacement is needed.
  • Odour filter: Replace according to the manufacturer’s guidance. If nuisance odours become noticeable, leave the contaminated area and check the filter system.
  • ABEK1 gas filter: Replace according to a planned schedule based on the gases/vapours present, exposure levels and working conditions. Do not rely on smell to determine when it needs replacing.

How often you use your PAPR, the type of contaminants and the conditions in your workshop all affect filter life.

2. How Do You Know When Your Filters Need Replacing?

Your TECMEN FreFlow V1 PAPR has a built-in warning system to help monitor particle-filter blockage.

The display indicates particle-filter loading, while flashing warning lights, audible alarms and vibration alerts can indicate filter blockage or low battery.

If a warning activates, leave the contaminated area and check the cause before continuing work.

WorkSafe New Zealand advises: “Stop working if the airflow rate drops or any of the warning devices activate.”

Remember: The filter-loading indicator does not tell you how much service life remains in a gas/vapour filter. These filters require their own replacement schedule.

3. What Are the Different TECMEN Filters Used For?

Your TECMEN FreFlow PAPR uses different filters depending on the application.

FilterPurpose
Pre-filterCaptures larger particles before they reach the main filter, helping extend its useful life.
P3 Main Particle FilterFilters harmful airborne particles, including dust and welding fumes.
Odour FilterHelps reduce nuisance odours. It is not a substitute for suitable gas/vapour protection.
ABEK1 Gas FilterProvides protection against specified gases and vapours when correctly selected and used with the required particle filter.

Important: Always ensure the filters fitted are suitable for the contaminants in your workplace.

4. How to Look After Your TECMEN Filters

Correct maintenance and storage help keep your PAPR working effectively.

  • Check before use: Inspect filters for damage, contamination or moisture.
  • Don’t wash filters: Particle and gas filter media cannot be cleaned. Replace them when damaged or dirty.
  • Store correctly: Keep equipment in a clean, dry environment, following TECMEN’s storage instructions.
  • Keep a record: Record when filters are fitted and replaced, particularly gas/vapour filters that require scheduled replacement.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: Always check the guidance for your specific TECMEN PAPR model and filter combination.
