 ‘It’s not personal, it’s business’

A tried-and-true statement referring to making decisions based on the best interests of the company. However. Relationships matter too right? Especially in New Zealand where we only have 2° of separation.

So what do you do when you get a great offer from a supplier, but taking it would mean turning down a supplier that’s been good to you for years?

Lets evaluate the situation…

Business

The first thing to consider is what impact will this new offer have on the business?

Will it have life changing benefits? Save the company significantly? Improve processes and allow for greater production?

If the offer is likely to have a seriously positive impact on your business, they are worth serious consideration…

Relationships

The next thing to consider is this…

If you tell your current supplier that you’ve got another offer that’s too good to turn down:

  • Will this really ruin your relationship with them?
  • Will they punish you and jack up their prices for items you still purchase off them?
  • Are they going to stop buying you a beer at the pub?

Unlikely. That kind of behaviour would make them look like sore losers and would simply lead to them losing business.

If we’re looking at it from a positive perspective, letting a supplier know you’ve had a better offer just gives them the opportunity to do better…and maybe improve their own offering!

So there’s no need to feel bad about doing what’s best for your business, and being honest about it – you could be doing everyone a favour!
